What to Expect With an Au Pair From Colombia
As most Latin American countries, Colombians can be described as outgoing, warm-hearted, and sociable people. A Colombian au pair is likely to be flexible on schedule, and will look forward to being a part of the family. A Colombian au pair will usually communicate easily about how she feels.
Colombian couples have on average three children, but have many relatives living nearby. Family is at the center of one's life in Colombia, and get-togethers, family reunions and meals are very common. Colombian children love their family so much that in fact, they tend to move out of their parents' home rather late; they often only settle on their own when they get married.
You can expect your live-in nanny from Colombia to have gained a lot of child care experience through babysitting cousins, nieces, and nephews. It's not very common in Colombia to use a day cares and parents rely heavily on relatives to care of their children.
In Colombia approximately 40% of households own a car. As can be expected, a Colombian au pair is likely to have little driving experience. Some Colombian au pairs take their driver's license as part of their au pair application. It is always recommended that you discuss your driving needs with your au pair.
Colombian students are required to learn English from elementary school through high school. The curriculum of English classes focuses more on writing than speaking so you can expect your au pair to be better at writing and reading than listening and speaking. A good idea would be to put in writing your house's rules and your au pair's schedule, at least in the early stages of the program year, to ensure all is understood.

I wish to join the EurAupair program to combine my passion for childcare with my background in psychology. My experience began by taking care of my younger brother and working as a recreation leader, and my main goal is to open a therapeutic center in Colombia to support children in need. I am excited to learn about American values such as diversity and creativity in education while sharing aspects of Colombian culture, like our traditions and warm family connections. This exchange will enrich my personal and professional development and allow me to contribute to the emotional and social well-being of the children in my care. Thank you for considering my application.

I want to be an au pair because I want to interact with and get to know American culture. I also want to do what I like most: accompany children on their life's journey through study and travel while sharing an incredible experience. I consider attitude and knowledge to be of great importance when interacting with children because each child is unique and needs to feel confident in order to express themselves. At the same time, we act as their guide and companion, helping them discover and develop in total communion with themselves and their surroundings. I believe I possess these qualities because I have worked with children for a long time, and my career has prepared me to contribute positively to a child's daily life. Leaving my comfort zone and living in another country is an enriching experience because I will be able to learn a thousand new things about a new culture and I will be able to take a little piece of my country with me. Participating in the exchange program is a personal challenge for me because I want to take on new responsibilities. I have always been very interested in learning from children, I love to share activities with them because they always teach you even though they do not have a higher education and what I mean is that they show you how to be a person with their kindness and affection. I would like to experience new changes in my life and to be able to offer my skills to the culture, to show my culture to the world because it is one of the most beautiful that you can know in terms of gastronomy, music and history, besides this I feel that I am a committed person, responsible with what I propose and you will feel that when I take care of the children. I am very charismatic, I see the positive in everything even if things do not go as planned, and I do everything with love because I feel that makes the situations look more pleasant.
