Au Pairs From Thailand
Located in South-East Asia, Thailand is known for its tropical beaches, royal palaces, tuk-tuks and spas. Thailand is one of the most visited South-East Asian nations. Thais are typically very respectful, open-minded and are among the friendliest people in the world. When you host an au pair from Thailand, you'll learn more about this fascinating culture, and your children will find that you share more in common with other cultures than they might have thought.
Family is a big part of one’s life in Thailand. Your Thai au pair is likely to have two siblings. Thais are very caring and will help their parents taking care of their younger siblings or look after their neighbor’s or friend’s children as well. They have a lot of experience babysitting from this family structure, and they may look after extended family as well. Thais will live with their parents until they start their first job.
For more than three decades, EurAupair has been facilitating the culture exchange allowing au pairs from Thailand and other countries to come to the United States and assist a family in need of child care. You and your child will both learn new things when you meet your Thai au pair.
General Facts About Thailand
By hosting a Thai au pair in the U.S., your family will discover many things about Thai culture, such as the following:
- The population of Thailand is 68 million.
- The capital city of Bangkok is home to many individuals, with a population of 8.3 million.
- Life in Thailand is fast-paced in Bangkok but much more laid back in the villages along the coast and the gorgeous islands that draw tourists.
- The vast majority of residents of Thailand speak Thai, though Burmese is also spoken by some.
- Many in Thailand welcome the chance to become an au pair in order to improve their English skills and gain better job prospects upon returning home.
- They may also want the opportunity to visit the United States.
Family Life and Children in Thailand
Because family is central to life in Thailand, many au pairs have experience caring for children from a young age. They'll often watch kids under the age of two. Many Thai au pairs get their first jobs in daycare centers, giving them experience in a structured child care environment.
Thai children respect their parents and value their opinions. They often come home from college every weekend to spend time with family while earning their degrees.
Driving Skills
A driver’s license can be obtained at 18 years old, after taking a written and practical exam. Many Thais will use public transportation if they live in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, as it is well developed and is a popular way of transportation there. Thais living outside of the capital will drive their own car. Thais are used to driving small vehicles, in rainy weather, on highways or in the countryside. However, they don’t have much experience driving in the snow! It is always recommended that you discuss your driving needs with au pairs during the interview process.
Education
School education in Thailand is 12 years long and is free to students going to public schools. Parents put a priority on education for their children. Most Thais are college graduates. Education coursework during the program year is very important for your Thai au pair.
English is taught at an early age by Thai teachers, from primary school to high school. Grammar and writing skills are emphasized; therefore most Thais are better in writing than speaking. However, they know a lot of vocabulary, and Thai au pairs improve their spoken English very quickly when they arrive in the United States.
Communication and Language Skills
Since they learn English so young, most Thais have a basic command of the language and are looking for opportunities to practice speaking. They may need encouragement to communicate when something is bothering them, due to their hierarchal culture that demands politeness and respect of their elders. Reach out to them and encourage them to talk to you if you sense that they're homesick.
Religion
While Thailand has no official religion, the law demands the king be Buddhist. Most people in Thailand are also Buddhist, though there are also some Muslims and a small number of Christians.
Diet
Thai people love food, and they show their love of their family by preparing it. Thais rely heavily on woks and mortars and pestles to prepare dishes featuring lots of fresh vegetables and lean meat or seafood. Their food has a reputation for spiciness thanks to the chilies and garlic used in many recipes.

Becoming an au pair in the USA has been a dream of mine since middle school. For me, it’s the best way to discover the country, not just as a tourist, but by living with a family and sharing their daily life. I really want to experience this adventure and create memories that will stay with me forever. I love spending time with children. Babysitting and helping with homework taught me to be patient, responsible, and creative. I enjoy playing games, and finding fun activities to do together, and I would be happy to share this with my future host family’s children. I think my studies and work experiences also make me a strong candidate. I have always studied in work-study programs, which means I learned how to be organized, independent, and adaptable. These qualities, combined with my motivation and my caring personality, make me feel ready for this experience.
